Whenever he was alone, he went through a mixture of emotions.
Pleasure. Disgust. Happiness--maybe even joy.

And then the realization of utter solitude set in, and he was left nothing more than a sad and empty being.

Granted, it was usual for Kelpies to be solitary creatures, the kind that weaved in and out of shadows and casted shadows and illusions of grandeur over the minds of others, the kind of creature that went dancing on the backs of the bruised.
And usually, he was no different, for he found an almost obscene pleasure in the sufferance and pain of others--it was a cathartic experience for him.

As it was, a handsome stallion had wandered into his woods and now Kiernan of the Lake had a meal. Jaws worked violently at the flesh and bone, the sound of muscle and tendon snapping nearly echoing through the woods. A scrap was thrown to the Timber Wolves that lingered on the sidelines, circling like vultures to fight for the remnants of his meal. Not that there would really be remnants, as was painfully obvious with the loud and horrific crunching of bone.

Mm. The delicious taste of unsuspecting tourist.

Of course, this did positively nothing to ease the feeling of loneliness that was beginning to well up inside him.

Loneliness. What a strange feeling indeed--he was unused to it, though beginning to feel it more and more.

Chronius was getting annoyed. He hadn't found anything of interest in his latest foray into the Everfree. He had been looking for some time and was starting to get tired and thirsty. If he didn't see anything soon he would just have to call it a day. Just then however he heard something. A few snapping sounds and nothing else.

"Must be wolves.",he muttered to himself. But wait wolves weren't usually that quick, that precise. No whatever did this must be more than a simple animal. At this point he had two choices. Do the smart thing and go home leaving whatever dangerous thing had caused the noises to it's own business and hope it wasn't hungry. Or try and find out what had happened and satisfy his curiosity.

"What's that thing they say about curiosity?" he mused. "Something about cats?" "Oh well, I'm sure its nothing important.", he joked as he began to walk in the direction of the strange sound. As he began to get closer and closer the Kirin slowed his pace and pressed himself against the ground as best he could. If the creature was still around he didn't want to make himself an easy target. However he must have been more tired than he thought as when he crept even closer he stepped on a stick with a crisp and loud

Kiernan's ear perked, skull swinging to the side as the broken branch drew his attention. Surely a distasteful sight, with blood covering his face and slithering down his scaly throat.
But oh, what a sight it was when that face pulled back into a grin, rising to his feet to let the body slide into the lake and float about, a bloated buffet for him to return to later. Waterlogged beast made his way onto the shores of the lake, hooves clinging to the mud and sludge as silt-covered spine was shaken and water weeds were dragged from his mane and tail.

"Why don't you come out and say hi? Come now, I don't bite." A blatant lie.

Of all the worst things that could happen this was The. WORST. POSSIBLE. THING! Chronius had been caught and he knew it. He could try to run but from his position the creature, which he could now identify as a Kelpie, would likely chase him down in seconds. Also with his scaling being sparse his teeth would make quite short work of him. He would have to get out of this with magic and wits.

The plan was simple he would pretend to comply and when he got close he would unleash a blinding flash, use a telekinetic push to through him into the pool and make a break. Hopefully that would by him enough time to escape back into the forest. It was a gamble but it was the only chance he had.He pushed his fear down to the back of his throat and took a few steps forward.

"Why hello, my friend.", he said with a strained grin.

Kiernan was no spring chicken--not in the least. He arched his spine, tongue rolling out over his teeth to lick away the blood that was beginning to coagulate over his muzzle, his neck pulled high as skull twisted owlishly to the side at a nearly impossible angle.

He could smell it--fear. It was a lovely seasoning to any meal, but this one was a bit over-ripe and nearly reeked of an otherwise pleasant scent. Hnph. He'd get rid of this, as it was beginning to vex him.

"I don't quite recall being friends. As I have none. But good evening. And just what is a lovely little kirin like you doing wandering so aimlessly through my territory, hm?" the question was polite, filled with mirth though slightly laced with a hint of malice.

Chronius should have been quaking in his boots but he knew that if he broke is facade he would be dead before he hit the ground. He tried to breath calmly and focus. It was just like acting. Only for a smaller audience who would be eating him if he wasn't convinced.

"Well I must thank you for the compliment my good sir, and may I say that while you may not be my friend I am most certainly yours. You see, my lord, I am a wandering magician, as one with a modicum of your intelligence could tell by the horn on my head. We tend to be a stringy and thin sort and a noble hunter of your supreme skill and infinite eminence would benefit much more from my magical skill than the the thin snack you could attempt to skim from my bones. You see my good sir I notice that you seem to be most comfortable when in the water and while you are the unquestionable master of your realm it must at times see a bit limiting."

So far so good he took a few more steps doing his best to feign confidence and pomp. Attempting to make himself out too be pompous and unaware of how dangerous the situation was. If the kelpie thought him a fool he would be out of his guard and be unprepared for the trap he intended to spring.

"You see I will cast a spell upon you sir that will cover you in a membrane of the good ol' wet stuff as you move about on the land. Imagine a terror such as yourself allowed to travel uninhibited across the Everfree, who knows you could go as far as Ponyville. Heck even Cantelot if the mood strikes you! Imagine the royal feast that would await!"

He knew if no such spell even existed or even if the kelpie already had such an ability. They key however was to seem as if was something only he could cast and that he was a coward more than willing to do so. As he focused on gathering his magic together his horn began to glow in a bright white but was surrounded by a black aura.

"The only thing I ask is that you allow me to proceed from this place both whole and un-gobbled. Now my good friend and lord will you please come close and focus your eyes on my horn?"

How very droll.
"Now now, no reason for that. Your fear is practically permeating your very flesh, it spoils the flavor." he half-teased," But you're quite the lucky one, as I've already gotten myself a rather delightful meal, and as it is, I'm full. No need to be hunting today, though that still leaves the question...
What will you give me in return for sparing your life? After all, you've wandered into my precious lands, as others have done many times before. This forest is my domain, and both those in Ponyville and Canterlot know well of me, and do well to steer clear. But you, my little tourist, are not as lucky. Spells, you see, are useless for me." he explained, head twisting to the side as shoulders arched and he began to slowly advance forward upon him.

However, as a kelpie, he was adept in spells of illusion. The truth of the matter was that he was quite comfortably settled at the edge of his lake.

The kelpie was approaching even still. It seemed like his deception would win him his life. Wait. what was that nagging he felt in the back of his head. what could possibly be wrong. The forest was silent as he crept closer but then he suddenly stopped. The forest was quiet. Almost disconcertingly so. he blinked a few times and looked around. Deception, that was it. He had been warned of this before. That overconfidence, especially when dealing with the unknown could turn the tide of a battle. He had misjudged who was the overconfident one however. If he was right then the kelpie may have already won.

He spun around trying to see some sort of flaw in the illusion. Something he could use to free himself, but it was no use. Illusions were never his strong suit. As he thought about his current predicament he couldn't help but laugh at the whole situation. How ironic that the beast in the lake would be the one that had the upper hand in wit. He wondered if the beast would attack form the sides or from his back, but then realized it didn't matter. As long as the illusion held the best may as well have been everywhere a once He began to chuckle again as he walked right beside the kelpie he saw and sat down. At least the was one place he wouldn't be was exactly where he seemed.

He snickers one last time as he began to focus as much of his magic as he could for one last blast, one last present for when he felt those needle like teeth clench at his neck. If this was going to be the place he died he at least would not go without a fight.

"Okay," he shouted, "Looks like I'm caught. Gotta hand it to ya, you can sure weave an illusion." He laughed one more time. "Lets just save everyone some time and finish this up. Just promise to cook me first. Maybe into a pie or something."

He rolled his head on his shoulders, a hard snort leaving his nostrils before he spoke--or...his illusion spoke, one of the two. It was difficult to tell.
"Pies are not my favorite way to enjoy a meal, and as I said before, I'm quite full. The problem lies in the fact that you have not paid the toll for your trespassing-either give me something of importance that is worth your life, or I demand a pound of flesh for your safe passage through my forest."

His words were honest, as most of his deception lied in the visual aspects of himself, though words were something he could easily twist as well. He found it simply easier to speak blunt;y.

He paused for a few seconds. A toll? That was unexpected.. As far as he could tell the creature was being honest. However it was still dangerous. The worst part being that he had brought little and found nothing on his latest foray. Then he had an idea.

"As you may be able to gather I have nothing with me but my cloak and mask. However If you return to my home with me I'll make you a feast worthy of a king. No pony I'm afraid but rabbit, fish, duck, I even have a cockatrice that I've been saving for such an occasion. What do you say?"

It was certainly a risk showing the creature his home but Chronius figured that if the creature wished to track him down and devour him in the night that it would be quite simple for him to do so. Besides he was intrigued by this creature and if the beast did decide to attack he would prefer it to be on his own turf.

"Come on," he said, "No tricks I swear."

Kiernan's expression tore itself in a half, a wide and cheshire grin that was passionately vile, blackened teeth coated in scum and algae and tinted a sickening greenish black, needle-like daggers set heavily and jaggedly into discolored gums.
A toothy smile.
"Your mask would do quite nicely." he replied then, both images of himself giving a light shimmer before splitting a second time to bring four Kiernans' into play.

All four were watching, surrounding, giving that wide toothy smile.

His mask. This creature wanted his mask. It wanted the symbol of his greatest regret, of his ongoing journey, and for what a trophy that would likley sit a the bottom of its foul lake forgotten. The mere request erased any fear in his body an strengthend his resolve. Wearin that mask was his penitence, and he would not remove it for any creature no mater how threatening. If it ment death than so be it.

He began to summon all of the energy he could as he stood with a new resolve. He too a few steps and looked at the creatures wide grin, which seemed to mock him. positioning himself he stated a clear and calm,"NO." And let loose with the largest telekinetic burst he could muster.

That was only mildly unexpected. After all, most creatures were bound to fight back when their honor and things of real value were bargained for. Granted, the ancient being (for his age seemed to change whenever he felt the need, and only Celestia was old enough to gauge the creatures' true age) hadn't been expecting quite such a powerful response, and as a result, 3 of his four illusions were shattered, and both his real form and the illusion were forced to stumble back--one deeper into the water, and one to the edge of the lakeside. Hmph.

The constant shield was not yet broken, but now significantly weakened--however, it was a rather horrid idea to attempt to engage an ancient beast on its' own turf.

Despite this, Kiernan was feeling generous today, as the weariness of solitude was tugging at him.

"Is that so? Then a pound of flesh. Whatever meal you wish to prepare must be served here."

Chronius fared a bit better than he had expected. His onslaught had managed to shatter much of the illusion, although he knew not completely. He considered pressing the advantage but that idea left him along with much of his strength a second later. He had already been tired when he stumbled across the creature, and fighting it while hungry and tired, on its own ground no less would have been a terrible idea.

The creature seemed to be feeling generous and he should take advantage of it. He walked back to his hut and gathered a selection of meats, herbs, wood, bread and ale stashing them all into a large stirring pot. which he levitated a bit off the ground an had trail behind him. He had briefly considered not returning, but despite the scuffle he was still quite curios.

"Lets just make sure I don't end up in this pot." he said to himself as he walked back to the lake. The trip had taken a bit longer than expected and when he arrived he wanted to make sure that the creature knew who approached.

"Hello? pony eating monster it's your old kirin friend again. Let's hope your a creature of your word and I'm NOT walking into your horrible jaws!"

Kiernan had sunk back into the depths of his pool to sit and wait--of course, if the silly kirin didn't return, it would be no trouble at all to forcefully hunt him down and take the pound of flesh he so desired.

And he was only mildly surprised when he returned, proclaiming his presence loud, albeit nervously.

It took a moment for the kelpie to raise his head from the water, glowering eyes burning like embers from deep within his skull, skin glistening as mud slipped from his hide.

"Are you aware that 'pony eating monster' is quite the derogatory term? I am no monster, merely a predator with a wide variety of prey. I am not picky."
